Series Recommendation #2: Shin Mazinger! Shougeki Z-hen
A classic reborn. With glorious Super Robot action.Go Nagai-‘s Mazinger Z (1972) was the first mecha series to feature a piloting system where the pilot is situated in the robot itself. Being one the earliest mecha series (3rd one to ever animated), Mazinger Z has since become a huge franchise spanning more than 46 years. However, the animation didn’t age well, and it desperately needed a reboot, and Shin Mazinger Z came along in 2009.
The original Mazinger Z (1972) vs Shin Mazinger Z (2009)
Plot: The main storyline follows the original Mazinger Z series at first, and deviates at the middle to include more characters and new plot details (some characters are from various other Go Nagai-sensei’s works). However, I recommend watching starting from episode 2 instead of 1 (episode 1 is the end events and starting from episode 2 the story is told from the start). The series contains many plot twists compared to the original series so if you are feeling adventurous, check out the manga and the original series after watching this.
Animation: Being a reboot in 2009, the animation is more modern and polished but still retain the charm of the classic Super Robot. Imagine a non-brick Mazinger Z and more dynamic animation (Rocket Punch in HD!). Characters animation are gorgeous as well.
Music: 2 Hironobu Kageyama openings should be an indication of absolute awesomeness. Ending theme is very nice as well. Get you hype and pumped for the episode.
Overall, Shin Mazinger Z is an excellent reboot for Mazinger fans to relive the Iron Castle's glory with modernized animation. However, it did fall short in bringing in new fans, hence it hasn't got the sequel it deserve.
